My main piece for the EF artshow! A Masai-themed jackal. He'll be on sale there.

A few notes to say about it, for those interested. It's pretty large irl, measuring about 42cm high (16.5"). The colours are a lot nicer in real life, because as usual, I am terrible at scanning and colour adjustment. And he's done in mixed media: watercolours, Prisma pencils, and a little marker.

The reason I chose to draw this is because Eurofurence this year has the Serengeti theme. Now, I can't say I'm that keen on tribal cultures, but the one thing that interested me about the Masai was their jewellery making. So, perhaps you can think of this guy as a Masai jeweller.

The jewellery and clothing were all referenced from a whole bunch of photos of the Masai people and their crafts.

How do you colour so well with pencils and watercolours? And were does watercolour come in? I can't find any tutorials on here about how to make traditional so details with colouring pencils and watercolour. My traditional isn't very good.

The watercolour is used as a base layer for the most part, so you will just paint in (quite sloppily in my case) basic colours in watercolour first, allow that to dry, then go over with pencils. With the more smooth areas (in this case, his robes) I will put a base layer of watercolour, go over with pencil, go over again with watercolour, again with pencil and so on till it looks right.

Remember to keep your pencils sharp! And it's a good idea to stretch or tape down watercolour paper (though I didn't with this). I hope this helps. :)
